As the depths of winter melt away and the days grow longer, spring ushers in a refreshing new season. Soon, long gone will be the days of muddy paws, splattered skirting boards, many layers and our waterproofs will be retired to a wardrobe and in its place will be open windows, dry feet, swimming in rivers and our sunglasses will be dusted off too!

For dog us owners, Spring is the perfect opportunity to make plans to enjoy the outdoors with your furry friend! Spring offers an abundance of activities to keep both you and your dog active, engaged, and enjoying the sunshine. We’ve put together our favourite ways to embrace the new season and make the most of the great outdoors with your dog.

1. Hikes and scenic walks

Spring is the best time to explore trails and national parks. The days are longer which allows you to spend more time outside, the weather is milder and the environment is lush with new life. Your dog will love the fresh smells and sights of the new places to explore. Whether you’re hitting a local trail or going on a weekend adventure, hiking with your dog is an excellent way to bond and get both of you some exercise.

The National Trust have locations across the UK and even have a pawprint rating system to make it easier to plan a visit with your dog. Find out more here.

2. Picnic at your local park

Nothing says spring like a picnic in the park! Pack a blanket, snacks for your, and your dog’s favourite treats for a relaxing afternoon (shop the Hollings travel size treats here). Many parks are dog-friendly, offering plenty of open space for your pet to roam and socialise with other dogs. If your dog enjoys fetch, make sure to bring along a ball or a frisbee for some active fun!

3. Dog-friendly beaches

Spring is an ideal time to take your dog to a dog-friendly beach. The warm sand and cool water are perfect for frolicking. Some dogs love to splash in the water, while others prefer to run along the shore. Either way, it’s a great opportunity for your dog to burn off some energy. Plus, it’s a fun way for you both to relax and enjoy the sunshine together.

But! Of the many beaches around the British coast only a small proportion allow dogs all year round. Fear not though, you can ensure you don’t have a wasted trip by checking with Beach Guide, who have compiled a list to all the regional UK dog friendly beaches here.

4. Gardening together

Spring is the perfect time to get your garden blooming—and your dog can join in the fun! If your dog enjoys being outside, they can help you in the garden by supervising your planting efforts. While they might not be able to dig holes for you (unless, of course, they’re digging for fun!), having your dog around while you work in the yard is a great way to spend time outdoors together.

5. Take a road trip

If you're feeling adventurous, consider taking your dog on a road trip to explore new places. Whether it's a weekend getaway to a nearby town or a scenic drive through the countryside, your dog will love the excitement of a change in scenery. Be sure to stop along the way for short walks or sightseeing—dogs love to experience new sights and smells! P.S. Don’t forget to pack your Hollings treats too - have a read of our previous blog about treats and travel here.

6. Dog events

Spring is the perfect time to explore the countryside with your dog, and there are plenty of events to enjoy together. Look beyond just dog shows and discover dog-friendly country shows, spring festivals, and even flower shows where your canine companion is welcome. These events offer a chance to enjoy the outdoors, meet fellow dog lovers, and create lasting memories. Check your local listings for dog-friendly countryside events this spring!
