As 5th November approaches, so do the nerves for many dog owners. Loud or unexpected noises that are usually experienced during firework night can be frightening for many dogs.

As dog owners ourselves, here at Hollings we know how upsetting it can be to see your best friend getting distressed. And we’re not alone, many dog owners have noticed this type of reaction during firework season.

The good news is there are certain things that can be put in place to help your four-legged friend through some of the loudest nights of the year. Don’t forget, it's not just 5th November that displays take place, often the season is celebrated over the period of the week.

If you're expecting fireworks:

  • Find out when local fireworks to you are happening, this can ensure you are well prepared and neither you nor your dog are taken by surprise.

  • Never leave your dog on their own. Having the company of someone they know, and trust will help them relax.

  • Ensure you don’t go out after dark. Making sure you have a cosy spot where your dog is well settled before any fireworks start and not forcing them outside during fireworks will help keep them calm

  • Make sure you have plenty of distraction treats available for your dog. Some firework displays can go on longer than others! Our Pure Ham Bones are perfect for an evening, bones are longer lasting chews which provide hours of healthy, relaxed chewing – helping to mentally stimulate your dog and promote calmness.

  • Your dog could run away if they are scared so check your house and garden are escape-proof.

What to do during fireworks:

  • Close windows and curtains to block out bangs and flashes of light. Putting on the tv or radio can help to disguise the noise. You can tune into Classic FM’s Pet Classics, an annual radio show spanning two evenings across the firework weekend to help pets relax during the season.

  • Recognise the needs of your dog and let them choose, e.g., if they:

  • Want to hide, let them stay where they feel safe.

  • Want reassurance, calmly give them comfort and love.

  • Don’t seem worried, then offer them their favourite treats. If your dog isn’t a huge fan on bones, our long lasting, highly digestible, air dried trachea filled with a delicious mix including novel protein venison could be perfect for them! As well as being a great distraction during firework night, our beef trachea is naturally high in chondroitin and glucosamine which can support joint health in dogs.
